Where your card works, and why it can be declined
Most online merchants accept the card, but each merchant decides. The usual reasons for a decline and how to fix them.
Your card works for online payments wherever the merchant accepts the card network shown on it. Each merchant decides which cards it takes, and some do not accept virtual cards at all. We cannot promise acceptance anywhere.
The usual reasons for a decline
- Not enough balance. The charge, plus any currency conversion, is more than the card holds. Reload and try again.
- A verification charge. Some services take a small temporary charge when you add a card. It needs a little balance too.
- Address mismatch. Enter the billing address exactly as shown under Cards, including the postcode.
- Name mismatch. Use the name printed on the card, not your own if they differ.
- The merchant refuses virtual cards. Nothing on our side can change that. Use another way to pay for that merchant.
- The card is frozen or closed. Check its status under Cards.
Before a big purchase
Check the merchant's help pages for the cards they accept, and leave enough on the card for price, tax, shipping and conversion together.
Currency
The balance is held in US dollars. When a merchant charges in another currency, the amount is converted and the card network's rate applies. Leave a little extra on the card for that.
Still declined?
Open a ticket under A card with the last four digits, the merchant's name, the date and time and the amount. We can see whether the charge reached the card and why it was refused.
